 The Torch of the Incheon Asian Games lights in New Delhi

The torch of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games was lighted at Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, India on Aug. 9 at 3:00pm in local time.

 

President Kim Young-Soo of the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee, Head Park Seon-Kyu of sacred-torch relay squad, Minister Sarbananda sonowal of Indian State for Youth Affairs and Sports, President Ramachandran of the Indian National Olympic Committee, Secretary General Raja Ranbir SINGH of the Olympic Council of Asia, New Delhi citizens, Korean Ambassador to India Lee Joon-Kyu, and 500 Korean residents in India participated in the torch lighting ceremony.

 

It is the first time that the torch of the Asian Games was lighted outside of the host country. The Asian Games Organizing Committee determined New Delhi as the torch lighting place, where the 1st Asian Games was hosted, the committee hopes that this event may also occur in the future Asian Games.

 

President of Kim Young-Soo of the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee remarked, “The torch lighting symbolizes the Asian Games’ spirit that is to contribute to promoting peace and reconciliation.” He also stated that the Games in Incheon will showcase diverse cultures and history which will contribute to world peace through friendship and harmony.

 

The torch was lighted by the head priest of India surrounded by 17 Indian priestesses. The head priest ignited the torch by focusing sunlight with a concave mirror. The torch was then passed to a representative of India, a representative of the Olympic Council of Asia, and a representative of the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee. The first runner for the torch relay was Susil Kmar, an Indian wrestler and an 81 old Korean-Indian man received a lot of attention among 40 runners because he has been living for almost half of his life in India after the Korean War.

 

The torch lighted from New Delhi was transported to Yen Tai of China on Aug. 10 by plane. Then it will be relayed to Weihai of China on Aug. 12 and then will travel to Incheon by ship. Finally, at the Incheon City Hall Plaza on Aug. 13 at 4:00pm the torch that traveled from India to China will merge with another torch lighted from Chamseongdan Altar on the top of Mt. Mani in Ganghwa, Republic of Korea.

 

The torch relay will travel through 70 cities for 5,700km nationwide, passing by Baeryeong island, Jeju island, and Ulleong island and more than 4,000 runners, including actress and Goodwill Ambassador of the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee Lee Si-Young, singer Hyo Rin of SISTAR, and 2012 London Olympic medalist in Archery Gi Bo-Bae, will participate in the domestic torch relay.
