(Asiad) Weightlifters from Koreas come up short of medals
By Kim You Jin
INCHEON, Sept. 20 (Yonhap) -- Two weightlifters from the two Koreas came up short of a medal in the women's 48-kilogram division on Saturday at the 2014 Asian Games here in Incheon.
Paek Il-hwa of North Korea barely missed out on her country's first medal at this year's Asiad, finishing fourth because of her body weight. She was tied with Mahliyo Togoeva of Uzbekistan and Sri Wahyuni Agustiani of Indonesia with a total weight of 187㎏, 7㎏ behind the gold medalist, Margarita Yelisseyeva. Paek was the heaviest of the three by 0.3㎏ and was relegated to fourth place.
Under weightlifting rules, competitors' body weight serves as the tiebreaker when two or more lifters hoist the same weight.
Agustiani took home the silver and Togoeva the bronze at the Moonlight Festival Garden Weightlifting Venue.
Paek, 21, ranked second behind Yelisseyeva after the snatch with 85㎏, but the best she could do in the clean and jerk was 102㎏, while Augustiani lifted 107㎏ and Togoeva did 106㎏.
Im Jyoung-hwa of South Korea was further back in the pack. She finished seventh after lifting 78㎏ in the snatch and 96㎏ in the clean and jerk for 174㎏ total.
Im was trying to win her first Asiad medal. During the previous Asian Games in Guangzhou, the 27-year-old had to withdraw from the competition for being overweight for her division.
The closest she came to earning a medal was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She lifted 196㎏, the same total weight as the bronze medal winner, but missed the podium because she weighed 0.51㎏ more than her counterpart.
