  • General interest
    • Highlights : Qatar hosted the 2006 Asian Games in Doha and its athletes used the familiar surroundings to capture 32 medals - nine golds, 12 silvers and 11 bronzes. This was a big step for the country, as it had only won a total of 46 medals in seven previous Asian Games appearances. One of the host's highlights of the 2006 Games was provided by the men's football team, who defeated Iraq 1-0 in the final to win the gold medal.

      Runner Mohamed Suleiman is the most successful Qatari athlete in Asian Games history with five gold medals, including three in the 1500m and two in the 5000m between 1990 and 1998.
