NOC Profile

  • General interest
    • Highlights : Japan is one of only six countries to have competed in every edition of the Asian Games, and it finished top of the medal table at eight of the first nine editions. Although Japan has not finished top since 1978 it has also never finished outside the top three during that time. Japan has hosted the Asian Games twice - in Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

Swimmer Yoshimi Nishigawa has won more gold medals than any other Japanese athlete, and her 10 gold medals is only bettered by Chinese shooter Wang Yifu. Nishigawa won her 10 golds over two editions of the Games, winning gold in the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay in both 1970 and 1974.

Shooter Ryohei Koba has the most total medals of any Japanese athlete, having won 15 medals between 1982 and 1998.
