NOC Profile

  • General interest
    • Highlights : Iraq won at least one gold medal in its first three appearances at the Asian Games. It did not send a team between 1986 and 2006, but returned to the Games in 2010.

      Iraq's first gold medal was won by Talib Faisal Al Saffar who triumphed in the 400m hurdles at the 1974 Games.

      In 1982 the men's football team secured the gold medal with a 1-0 win over Kuwait in the final, in what is to date Iraq's last Asian Games gold medal.

      On its return in 2006 from a 20-year hiatus, Iraq's football team again provided success. In 2006 the team reached the final against Qatar, but this time were on the losing end of a 1-0 scoreline and had to settle for silver.
