NOC Profile

  • General interest
    • Highlights : Iran has only missed two edition of the Asian Games and enjoyed its most successful edition on home soil in Tehran in 1974, winning 36 gold medals to quadruple its previous best of nine set in 1970. Wrestling and weightlifting were the cornerstone of its success in Tehran, with wrestler Eskander Moslem Filabi winning a gold medal in both freestyle and Greco-Roman versions of the sport. He remains the Iranian athlete with the most gold medals in Asian Games history, having won four golds between 1966 and 1974.

Four years ago in Guangzhou, Iran returned its best medal haul since 1974 - winning 20 gold, 15 silver and 24 bronze medals. Again wrestling provided the most successes for Iran, but it was wushu athlete Khadijeh Azadpour who made history. Her victory in the 60kg weight category made her the first Iranian female gold medallist at the Asian Games.
