General
SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT
He was the first Indian athlete to participate in the 50km race-walking event at an Olympic Games, finishing 36th at London 2012 but setting a new Indian national record in the process, bettering the mark of his mentor and coach, Gurdev Singh. (thehindu.com, 08 Jul 2012; dnaindia.com, 11 Aug 2012)

HUMBLE BACKGROUND
He hails from a village 12 hours away from Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. He joined the Gorkha Regiment of the Indian Army in 2002 to escape poverty in his home country Nepal, where his father is a farmer. "Even my parents don't know that I am a race walker. They think I play some game, maybe football. In Nepal, it doesn't matter if you're going to the Olympics. They neither know what it means nor care". He could not afford to buy proper shoes for the event and it was only after the media highlighted his plight that financial help came forward.
