His sports teacher was stunned and told him he had to take part in a throwing sport. "I have always loved throwing ever since I was a child. Even when we went to the Caspian Sea, I threw rocks into the sea." (thestar.com.my, 27 Jul 2008)

He became the first Iranian to win an Olympic medal in athletics when he won silver at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He also became the first Iranian to win a medal at an athletics world championship, when he won bronze at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, Korea. He was also the first Iranian man to win a medal at any international athletics championships when he won gold at the 2004 World Junior Championships. (Mehr News Agency, 19 Aug 2004) (presstv.ir, 07 Aug 2012; parsherald.com, 20 Apr 2013)

NATIONAL SUPPORT
In 2013 he voiced his concern over the lack of funding and poor training conditions in Iran, and said he would rather train and compete on his own than as part of the national team setup. "I truthfully no longer have any reason to compete for Iran. I have given my heart and soul to my country and my people. I think I am capable of competing for a place that will not take me for granted and at least provide me the great support and backing which I need and deserve. I have achieved things that no one else has ever done in the history of Iranian track and field. I had better conditions before my achievements."
