OLYMPIC FINAL CONTROVERSY
She won a silver medal in the singles event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, after losing in the final against Chinese table tennis player Li Xiaoxia. However the match was overshadowed by arguments between Ding and the Italian umpire Paola Bongelli. Ding was deducted three penalty points during the match, for illegal serves, time-wasting, and for taking her towel too early. "I had an obstacle, not only from the opponent, but from the judge as well. I was affected by her. After the first one [penalty point] I tried to keep cool but could not hold it after the second. The judge was too strict." (dailymail.co.uk, 01 Aug 2012)
