As a child he liked toy guns, so his neighbour suggested he try shooting as a sport. "The pistol is the general's weapon, and the rifle is the weapon of the soldier. I chose the pistol."

General
DEBUT GOLD
He travelled with the national team for the first time to the 2006 World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. It was planned he would compete in the youth section, but his qualifying performances put him directly into the senior event of the 10m air pistol. He went on win the gold medal, a result so unexpected that when he called home to tell them about his success, his father and coach thought he was joking, and did not believe he had won the senior title until seeing the result on television the following day. SCHOOL OR SHOOTING
His parents sent him to an amateur sports school in Baoding, China, but soon asked him to quit after his school grades began to be affected by his shooting training. His coach Zhang Guangwei persuaded his parents to let him drop out of school and focus on shooting. His father thought he if did not make it as a shooter, Wei could become a soldier. After training for seven hours every day, including lifting bricks to strengthen his arms, he was named as a reserve for the national team in 2005. (szdaily.sznews.com, 11 Aug 2008)
