CAREER
Born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, she made her international debut for the Soviet Union. Following the dissolution of the USSR, she represented the Commonwealth of Independent States [CIS] at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and later began competing for Uzbekistan. In 2002 her son Alisher was diagnosed with leukaemia, so her family moved to Germany where he could receive treatment. Chusovitina obtained German citizenship in 2006, winning a silver medal for her adopted nation at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She returned to Uzbekistan in 2013 having been given special dispensation by the executive committee of the International Gymnastics Federation [FIG]. (uznews.net, 06 Mar 2013)

TO GERMANY AND BACK AGAIN
She was accused of disloyalty by the Uzbekistan Gymnastics Federation [FGU] after she became a German citizen. The move was prompted after her son Alisher was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2002. Chusovitina claimed that she did not receive sufficient support from the FGU, and that she had been forced to sell her three-bedroom flat in Tashkent and two cars in order to fund treatment while still living in Uzbekistan. She was then offered medical treatment in Germany on the condition that she acquired citizenship and represented the nation. Following a change in leadership in the FGU in 2013, she began representing Uzbekistan again and was also offered the chance to work as a coach for the organisation. "I hope she has forgiven us," an FGU official said. (uznews.net, 06 Mar 2013)

CRUISING
Her role model as a child was US actor, Tom Cruise. "When I was little I had a big poster over my bed of Tom Cruise and every night I was dreaming of him and that was my motivation to wake up and go to train, maybe come to America one day and meet him." (ndtv.com, 25 Sep 2014)
