NATIONAL FIRSTS
He became the first Chinese athlete to be named Best Male Athlete at a world championships when he won the award in 2013. He also became the first Chinese swimmer to win the 400m freestyle event at a world championships, adding to the 800m and 1500m world titles he had won previously. CHARITY

CAR ACCIDENT
He was involved in a car accident in Hangzhou, China, in November 2013. The car he was driving collided with a bus and when police arrived to investigate Sun was unable to produce a driver's licence. He was given seven days administrative detention. "I should have been a role model as an athlete and a public figure but I failed my responsibility. I am deeply sorry for what I have done and will reflect on my behaviour." He was also suspended from the Chinese swimming team for violating team rules.
